Library celebrated Lunar New Year

Tuesday, January 24, 2012: Muriel Arnason Library celebrated its 4th Annual Chinese New Year that was well attended. Around 225 people primary kids enjoyed multicultural craft and traditional food. Throughout the afternoon, children, adults and even grandparents created dancing dragon puppets and lucky red envelopes (complete with chocolate coins) to help mark Year of the Dragon.

On the evening of Thursday, December 10, over 70 people from different cultures gathered at the Township of Langley Civic Facility to commemorate the 61st anniversary of the adoption of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Diwali (Festival of Lights) at Muriel arnason Library

Muriel Arnason Library and the Township of Langley celebrated their 6th annual Diwali (The Festival of Lights) on Saturday, Oct. 24. 2009. Around 400 people of all ages enjoyed Henna, crafts, face painting, a feature film on Diwali, and food in a festive atmosphere. Councillor Grant Ward and Mel Kositsky conveyed their wishes for a happy Diwali to the community.
In 2008, it was celebrated on Saturday October 18. It was a colourful event where hundreds of people enjoyed the beat of many cultures. A variety show featuring thirty-eight performers from ten different cultures began with Canada’s national anthem, sung by Judy the Manners Lady.

Langley International Festival

Fraser Valley Regional Library again participated in Langley’s International Festival held on August 8th at Douglas Park. Thousands people enjoyed several multicultural activities. Around 950 people visited library's booth and enjoyed snowflake kite making coloring and crafting, storytimes, entering the draw, and talking to the library staff regarding library programs and services.

A World of Mineral Treasures

Wednesday August 19: Ray Hill, a Distinguished Toastmaster, amateur mineralogist and gemologist, presented a colourful and interesting slide talk showing amazing gem and mineral treasures from countries all over the world including Korea, Pakistan, India , Canada , China , USA etc. Ray showed a number of photos of several minerals and rocks and shared some of the facts and myths associated with them. Over 60 people enjoyed the informative talk, and asked a number of questions during the seminar.

2008 Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Award - March 7th

Township of Langley Libraries win Cultural Diversity awardLibrary’s Outreach Programs and Marketing Recognized Second TimeFriday March 7th - in front of dozens of dignitaries including BC Lieutenant-Governor Steven Point, MPs, MLA's, and members of numerous municipal councils (and almost 400 others) - the Township of Langley Libraries was awarded the prestigious 2008 Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Award for Marketing and Outreach at the 6th Annual Awards Ceremony held at Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre, Abbotsford. Accepting the award on behalf of Township of Langley Libraries, Community Librarian Sarwan Singh Randhawa noted, “One of the goals of our library is to reach out to all members of the community, to leave no one out.” Sarwan went on to thank all of the Langley community service agencies, media, businesses and individual members of the community who work with the library and so enthusiastically support the library’s efforts. The Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Awards Ceremony annually recognizes and awards best practices amongst Fraser Valley businesses and service providers in responding to, and being inclusive of, the diversity in the region they serve. The event - which spans the regions from Chilliwack to the Langleys - has been running 5 years and has become extremely popular, selling out its 400 seats every year well in advance.
